On the 27 of April 1994 nearly 20 million South Africans queued for hours in a dignified presence to vote in the first Democratic Elections of the country. This date officially marked the beginning of a New Era in South Africa and voted Nelson Mandela as South Africa’s first democratically elected president.

This day is celebrated every year in South Africa as Freedom Day.

To mark the 20th anniversary of this historic date two photographers, Antonia Venturini and Corinne Gans, are going on a journey across South Africa, in April 2014, on the Peace and Unity Tour.

Covering over 7000 km via train, they will engage with people and communities along the way to recollect the elections of 1994 and celebrate the spirit of Freedom. They will connect with projects that truly make a difference in people’s lives, and help construct the nation all South Africans aspire to.

They have chosen the theme of Peace and Unity to celebrate the legacy of Mr. Nelson Mandela, on whose spirit of reconciliation the New South Africa was born. As there can be no freedom without peace, and unity.

….breaking barriers!

“We must therefore act together as a united people, for national reconciliation, for nation building, for the birth of a new world. Let there be peace for all” – Nelson Mandela
